Alma Sheehan, Stagecraft coach

Working in complete confidence, I encourage performers at all levels to develop stage skills which can dissolve fear and open the mind and body to every dramatic possibility. The desire to succeed can sometimes inhibit self-expression and it can be fun to regain that necessary flow of energy and ideas which strengthens your interpretation and personal growth. Using simple and powerful techniques you can achieve authentic stage presence and learn to belong in any performance space. The experiences of rehearsals, auditions, competitions and performances can be transformed when you start to trust your own instincts and find solutions, becoming a complete performer who always has something to offer.

A major part of my work takes place in rehearsals when singers and instrumentalists ask me to observe them so we can then address any problems away from the rehearsal, working in private. I can help you unlock your imagination and physical potential, reducing that negative inner voice as you reclaim your confidence, creativity and stage presence.

Based in London, I use space at the National Opera Studio in Wandsworth, SW18, and the Wigmore Hall Studios in central London, W1, where I work with performers on a one-to-one basis. Away from the often judgemental environment of the rehearsal room. You are more likely to unlock your imagination and bring out your creativity in an atmosphere that is comfortable, calm and fun.

I studied at the Royal College of Music and then at the RCM Opera School. After a year at the National Opera Studio I went on to sing roles in Paris, Florence, Rome and also with English National Opera and the Royal Opera. I have run workshops at the Royal Academy of Music, the RCM and the Royal Northern College of Music and have coached young artists on the Jette Parker programme at the Royal Opera House. Alongside my private practise I teach stagecraft at the National Opera Studio and have recently been appointed Head of Stagecraft on the M.A. Opera Performance course at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

I have assisted on productions for Streetwise Opera, the London Handel Festival and the NOS and worked on productions with Oliver Mears, William Relton, John Copley, Martin Constantine, Daniel Slater and Jo Davies. In the rehearsal room, I am able to liaise between director and performer. My work is in guiding performers through all aspects of their preparation as they work towards their personal and artistic goals.
